WoF Retro Recap: December 22, 1998

Mon. episode of Christmas Week in S16

I’ll get back to my S12 revisit soon but since it’s Christmas in July and that today marks the re-airing of this past season’s Christmas shows, it would make sense if I do some holiday episodes I don’t have up yet. First, I’ll look at the rest of S16’s Christmas Week and Adam A. pointed out that this was an ugly one and you’re gonna see why.

EPISODE #3002: CHRISTMAS WEEK

Angel Santiago: 2nd Lt. in the Air Force who recently graduated from the Air Force Academy (now stationed at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, TX as a student pilot) and was bitten by a man-of-war (yikes) from Woodbridge, VA

Alison Kelly: student at the College of Notre Dame studying psychology and sociology hoping to get a job in criminal justice from San Carlos (she was founded in a contestant search at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco)

Ted Orris: airline pilot who flew a 737 and did some home-remodeling when not in the air from Moon Township, PA (right next to Pittsburgh International Airport)

Round 1: RHYME TIME

Angel: LaT

Alison: $250 T, N for negative

Ted: $800 R, two E’s, S for sorry

Angel: LaT again

Alison: $250 D, BANKRUPT

Ted: $600 M pair (NMC), solve…

D R E _ M
T E _ M

Not sure if Ted was part of a DREAM TEAM back then, but he solved for $1,100.

DUDS: N (Alison), S (Ted)
LaTs: 2 (Angel)

FEATURED PRIZE: 4n trip to Quebec City via Collette Tours worth $3,728

Round 2: QUOTATION (PUZZLER)

Alison: $10K’s right side

Ted: $600 T pair, $900 R, three E’s, BANKRUPT near $250 (lost $1,250)

Angel: two N’s for Free SPIN, $500 D pair, $250 H, $1,200 S trio, $300 Y, B for bad and used FS, one O, two W’s for Canada trip

S _ O W / A N D
S T E A D Y / W _ N S
T H E / R A _ E

He spun again…but BOMBED OUT w/ P to throw away $5,478 cash & trip – where do you think that would go, dude?! -__- Alison then said the $400 L…

S L O W / A N D
S T E A D Y / W _ N S
T H E / R A _ E

…and realized that “SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE”. Her PUZZLER’s a THING

T _ _ T _ I _ E

She forgot about the Aesop fable featuring this character as she said TURTLE instead of the right one of TORTOISE, so she only got the $500 minimum.

SOLE DUD: P (Angel)
BANKRUPTS: 2 (others)

Angel: ZERO/Alison: $500/Ted: $1,150

FEATURED PRIZE #2: $2,500 Mall of America GC + stay at Radisson Hotel South & Plaza Tower ($5,120)

Alison: Christmas box acquired w/ two P’s (there wasn’t anything in that box), leftover vowels of O and two U’s, solve…

P U N _ H / B O _ L
_ U P S / &
L A D L E

She made the solve…except she botched the pronunciation of the last word as “lat-tle” — UGH. -__- She very likely gave up $6,820 cash & prizes.

Ted: $700 C pair, $400 W for a complete board

P U N C H / B O W L
C U P S / &
L A D L E

Ted read the answer w/ the correct pronunciation for $1,550.

Not a word came out from his mouth and left behind in the LOG CABIN was the Christmas Stocking.

Actually, this was the worst episode of the season (not 4/8/99) because of the hard luck by Angel and the extremely low GT. -__-

rating: 0 (only the 2nd time I have ever given such a rating of that)

If your goal was to get everyone out of the Christmas Spirit, you managed to do just that. Good 4 u, Harry.

Normally, I’d defend myself and see the positives about the episode, but in this case, I really cannot (not counting the interviews). This was one of those rare few episodes that made me legitimately angry and depressed, and that’s saying a lot for this show.

Simply put, every round was a major slog and absolutely NOTHING was good about the gameplay. Truly a lump of coal for sure.
