WoF Retro Recap: November 2, 2001

I kinda find it odd that Adam S would post an episode like this one on a day that’s already way past Halloween, but the reason why is that there is a classic blunder featured in said episode.

EPISODE #3555: HALLOWEEN WEEK

$1K Toss-Up: ON THE MAP

_ _ E / _ E T O N
_ O _ N T A I N _

Shane blew it w/ THE KEATON MOWINS, which doesn’t even exist on the map.

_ H E / T E T O N
_ O _ N T A I N _

Eunice solved THE TETON MOUNTAINS (she pronounced the second word as “tee-ton” instead of “tee-tawn”, but it’s accepted). Wrapping up this week were…

Eunice Sullivan: 4th/5th grade teacher w/ one son named Tyler and queen of Double Dutch from Townsend, GA (orig. from New York)

Emineh Khachian: second-year student at USC dental school from Van Nuys

Shane Lacko: loan officer for a major financial co. w/ a 2.5-yr.-old daughter named Caitlyn from Grand Blanc, MI

Shane sadly passed away on June 30, 2009 at the age of 32 in this obituary note I found HERE.

$2K Toss-Up: PHRASE

S _ V _ / _ _ E
D A _ _

Shane only got the first two words.

S _ V E / T _ E
D A _ E

Eunice blew it w/ SAVE THE DAYS.

S A V E / T _ E
D A T E

Emineh got the right answer of SAVE THE DATE even though she said before buzzing in at this point.

Gift Tag: Mintolta

Round 1: BEFORE & AFTER

She started w/ a $450 T, an S for the Minolta gift tag, a $1,400 M pair, a single A, a $600 N pair, but then a dud vowel of O. Second, Shane called up two R’s for $1,800, but then a baddie of G. Third, Eunice wasted a turn w/ the BANKRUPT near $600. Emineh then bought six E’s…

_ E E – _ E E
_ E R M A N
M _ N S T E R

…she solved PEE-WEE HERMAN MUNSTER for $2,700 cash & GC.

DUDS: O (Emineh), G (Shane)
QUICK BANKRUPT: Eunice

FEATURED PRIZE: Phillips HD widescreen TV, Phillips DVD player, and “Shrek” DVD worth $3,220 (THE MOVIES)

Jackpot Round: THING

Two $3,500 T’s sent Shane on his way, but he BANKRUPTed near Jackpot just as quick. Eunice struck out w/ N for negative. Going to Emineh who said a $450 S, but then M for mistake. Shane said P for phooey on Jackpot. Eunice lit up two R’s for $800, three E’s, a $2,400 L quartet, but no more w/ Y. Emineh filled in a $900 H, two I’s, but struck out w/ G. Shane followed w/ a $3,500 F, a $1,600 D pair, and three A’s…

_ _ S T A R D –
F I L L E D
_ H _ _ _ L A T E
E _ L A I R

He blew the $4,850 solve by one letter w/ MUSTARD-FILLED CHOCOLATE ECLAIR — that was the blunder I was referring to. Eunice then said the last consonant of four C’s for $1,200

C _ S T A R D –
F I L L E D
C H _ C _ L A T E
E C L A I R

…and ate a CUSTARD-FILLED CHOCOLATE ECLAIR for $4,150.

DUDS: N (Eunice), M (Emineh), P (Shane), Y (Eunice), G (Emineh)
SOLE BANKRUPT: Shane
SOLE DQ: Shane’s blown solve
UNCLAIMED JACKPOT: $17,700

Round 3: TITLE

This round’s all Eunice: three T’s for $2,400, a $600 H, a $1K R pair, two A’s and four E’s, and a $300 S.

A / _ _ _ H T _ A R E

$3K Toss-Up: AROUND THE HOUSE

_ / B O T T L E
_ F / W O _ L I _ E

Eunice got out A BOTTLE OF WOOLITE.

Round 4: RHYME TIME

But she struck out on the spot w/ T, as did Emineh w/ S. Shane got up there two R’s for $1,200, but BANKRUPTed near $500. Eunice found a $400 C, but nothing more w/ L. Emineh struck out w/ F. Shane chose a $450 D, but then P for phooey. Eunice missed again w/ M, and it’s S-U time…

_ _ R _ C _ D _ _ R _

…w/ a $1,400 Final Spin.

Emineh: N (DUD)
Shane: K (UGH!)
Eunice: J (UGH!)
Emineh: V (UGH!)
Shane: two B’s (NMC)

_ B R _ C _ D _ B R _

Shane blanked out on the $3,250 solve, allowing Eunice to say ABRACADABRA for $400 and a $100 bonus.

DUDS: T (Eunice), S (Emineh), L (Eunice), F (Emineh), P (Shane), M (Eunice), N (Emineh), K (Shane), J (Eunice), V (Emineh)

FINAL SCORES
Eunice: $12,450/Emineh: $4,700 cash & GC/Shane: PARTING GIFTS

Normally I would put the dreaded word of “DESERVING” against somebody who played horribly like Shane, but since he died too soon, I gotta pay respects to this guy. May he rest in peace.

GT: $17,150
BANKRUPT TRASH: $8,200

Bonus Round

Eunice tried to salvage this week after spinning the C of CASH (thunderstorm).

She didn’t solve that one IN A JIFFY for $25K (she had ON A ROLL and IN A HURRY) and we were SKUNKED the first time that season.

That maingame was indeed spooky (largely because MUSTARD ECLAIR (nowadays F&D and that actually also exist in a savoury menu) and that 10 duds in speedup). Understand that you won’t want to label deserving to the late-Shane just for respect (you would gave that moniker if you are too upset on the mistakes, as you mentioned on some of the pages).
