WoF Retro Recap: September 6, 1999 — SEASON 17 PREMIERE

Another side project of mine begins. Let’s turn back the clock just over 20 years ago to the very end of the 1990s. Lots of notes on this season according to the timeline…

  • Harry Friedman was promoted from co-producer to co-executive producer w/ the late Merv.
  • Pat noted twice on the season premiere that the pegs were upgraded on the Wheel. These make the Wheel spin very tightly and loudly.
  • The contestants’ arrows are slightly redesigned to have a more curved appearance on each side.
  • Throughout this season, most two-word bonus puzzles were displayed on only one line instead of the usual two.
  • This was the only season to have a Preview Puzzle before the start of the show (they first appeared during the week of October 4).
  • Also on the week of October 4, the three $250 spaces on the Wheel were replaced. The orange-yellow one became $500, the purple one became $600 and the orange one became $800. With these upgrades, $300 was the minimum value, which remained until Season 31. Furthermore, $1,000 was added to whatever Pat landed on in the Final Spin.
  • This was the second and other season to have Puzzler Rounds (they first appeared in the previous season). Whoever solved the main round puzzle got a chance to win $3K in bonus money by solving another puzzle related to the one s/he just solved.
  • Presumably by the week of October 4th, the value of the bonus categories was increased to $3,000.
