WoF Recap: December 3, 2015

Well, it appears that I did miss something good last night in the wake of yesterday’s massacre in San Bernardino — there was another MDBR this week and a pair of brothers won the $40K for solving WAITING ANXIOUSLY, giving them a final total of $65,500 (Irma C. was their Secret Santa). Also, this was the second time this season that somebody in a MDBR landed on a letter but in the wrong place (in this case, they landed on the M of GAME instead of the one in AMERICA’S). Thanks to JP Mackey for the info. I hope to post the full recap soon once the coverage is available (and I really need that to posts my weekly stats).

As for tonight, I’m pre-empted by that damned “Thursday Night Football”, but it’s just for this week only. Thank goodness Bobby McBride came through for me.

$1K Tossup: PEOPLE

N _ E C _ _
& / _ _ _ _ _ W S

Bryce has solved NIECES & NEPHEWS. Bring in the next six Secret Santas, please…

Sue & Bryce Benton (mom/son): she’s from Taylorville, IL while he’s a state worker from Springfield
Ellen & Mel Villar (daughter/mom): Ellen’s an attorney while Mel’s from Sherman Oaks (the latter’s married for 46 yrs.)
Chuck Kraus & Jenny Kraus-Smith (brother/sister from St. Louis): he works at a local government agency while she works at Washington Univ.

$2K Tossup: PHRASE

L U _ _ / O _
T _ _ / _ _ _ W

It’s just the LUCK OF THE DRAW in some situations of the game, and the Bentons have tripled up.

Their first call of R is no good. Second, the Villars also miss w/ N. Third in line, the Krauses spin up a $1,600 pair of T’s, three O’s, but then the LaT. Back to the Bentons who put in two $650 S’s, buy two A’s and E’s, and uncover three $550 L’s plus a $600 C. Board…

_ / _ _ S T
_ A L L E _ / T O / S A _
_ / L O _ E / _ O _

…they solve Stevie Wonder’s “I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU” for $3,050.

DUDS: R (Bentons), N (Villars)
SOLE LaT: Krauses

Villars: $0/Krauses: $0/Bentons: $6,050

Mystery Round: SAME LETTER

The Villars BANKRUPT right out of the gate next to $650. Second, the Krauses insert a $600 T, three E’s, two $700 S’s, and three FP A’s to clean out the vowels already, after which they say a $600 R, a FP D, and the SL bonus of four $500 G’s. We have at this moment…

G A _ E S
G A D G E T S / &

…they can buy some GAMES, GADGETS & GEAR at places like sears w/ their first $5,850.

Villars: NIL/Krauses: $5,850/Bentons: $6,050

PP/Express Round: EVENT

The Krauses first take control of three T’s while on EXPRESS, two R’s for the sears gift tag, and an I, followed by a $550 P, two E’s, but then the same normal BANKRUPT to rid them of $5,050 cash & GT. The Bentons then light up a $1,300 N pair, and…

_ N
_ N _ _ R _ E T T _ _ _ E
T _ I P

…they’ve won AN UNFORGETTABLE TRIP to The Buccaneer in ST. CROIX worth $12,100.

Villars: NADA/Krauses: $5,850/Bentons: $19,450 cash & St. Croix

$3K Tossup: SHOW BIZ

B A _ _ _ P
S I _ _ _ R S

The Bentons didn’t need any BACKUP SINGERS, because they’ve swept the Tossups.

Round 4: THINGS

But those leaders have wasted a spin w/ the BANKRUPT near TD. Second for the Villars are an $1,800 S trio, two $600 T’s, an E, two $500 N’s, an A and two I’s…

_ _ S I _ A _
I N S T _ _ _ E N T S

…sound those MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, people — they’re finally scored their first $3,250.

Villars: $3,250/Krauses: $5,850/Bentons: $19,450 cash & St. Croix

We have yet another $1,500 FS. At the start, we have an intact null cycle w/ T, R, and N. Later, the Villar ladies have uncovered two P’s (one at the start of each line)…

P _ L _ S / _ F
P _ L L _ _ S

…they’ve found another six grand in these PILES OF PILLOWS.

DUDS: T (Villars), R (Krauses), N (Bentons), D (Bentons; Bryce called for that prematurely), C (Villars), M (Krauses)

Villars: $9,250/Krauses: $5,850/Bentons: $22,450 cash & St. Croix

GT: $37,550
BANKRUPT TRASH: $5,050 cash & GT

Villars: JS7329475 (Jasmine S.)
Krauses: AJ4669151 (April J.)

$100K Bonus Round
Sue spins up the C for her team.

Category: FOOD & DRINK
This big 18-letter answer initially reads…

_ L _ _ _ R _ _ L
_ _ _ E T _ _ E R

They’re looking good after calling FPGA (not sure why they called the G)…

F L A _ _ R F _ L
A P P E T _ _ E R

…don’t blow all the $33K you’ve won on your favorite FLAVORFUL APPETIZER, you two. They leave w/ $55,450 cash & trip.

You know the blues deserved more than they got, but blame whoever distributed the envelopes.

    My rating: 7.5
