WoF Recap: Thanksgiving 2015

Interestingly enough, I had an early showing of this episode in my area at noon (yes, you read that right).

On this Turkey day, we’re on the set where Sheri Blank cleaned up big time in the maingame (Fall Fun).
$1K Tossup: EVENT

I saw the Macy’s THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE this morning, and Stephen is the first to score w/ that response. And he’s not the only guy on this Turkey day panel…

Stephen Pyles: global cloud services co. recruiter from Atlanta
Allison Truesdell : tutor & newlywed who plays the guitar from Arroyo Grande, CA
Dale Eldridge: poker dealer & floor supervisor who grew up watching this game w/ his grandma from Vegas

$2K Tossup: FOOD & DRINK

_ _ R _ _ _ / _ _ D
S _ _ F _ _ _ _

Dale quickly gets TURKEY AND STUFFING.

TONIGHT’S SS: Furniture of America

Dale gets started w/ a $2,700 T trio, an E, an N for the SS, two A’s, then come a $650 R, three O’s and S for sorry to leave $9,100 cash & SS sitting there. Stephen follows w/ a $600 L, the sole dud vowel of I while on FP, two U’s, two $650 H’s and three TD C’s, then we have…

T O U C H _ O _ N
_ O U / L A T E R

…he solves TOUCHDOWN CATCH YOU LATER for $9,150.

SOLE DUD: S (Dale)

Stephen: $10,150/Allison: $0/Dale: $2K

Mystery Round: SHOW BIZ

Stephen’s first choices are a TD S, but then the sole dud vowel of A for awful. Second, Allison picks a $650 T, two E’s, but then N for no while she’s on the MW near LaT. Third, Dale takes out a $650 R, three O’s, two $600 F’s, three $650 B’s, and two $900 C’s. We now have…

B O _ / O F F _ C E
B _ O C _ B _ S T E R

…”Titanic” is one example of a BOX OFFICE BLOCKBUSTER, and he makes the $5,350 solve.

DUDS: A (Stephen), N (Allison)

Stephen: $10,150/Allison: ZERO/Dale: $7,350

Repeating Classic BP: ZIPPER

PP/Express Round: WAYD?

The scoreless Allison fires off a $700 N, two I’s, a dud of E via FP, a $900 G, two A’s and an O to clean out the vowels. She follows w/ a $1,300 pair of S’s, a $600 R, a $650 T, an L for the WC, and a $600 M before she sees…

_ O S T _ A R _ S

…she’s won her first $4,500 and she’ll probably be MAILING POSTCARDS from the ARUBA Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino.

Stephen: $10,150/Allison: $10,800 cash & Aruba WC/Dale: $7,350

_ _ _ I G _ E R
P E R F _ M E

Dale just made this game really tight as a result of solving DESIGNER PERFUME.

Round 4: PHRASE

His first pick of T is not there. Second for Stephen are a $500 S, two I’s, and a $1,500 trio of L’s…

I ‘ L L / _ _ / _ _ _ _
I _ / _ / _ L _ S _

…take out the first two words and you’ve got the bonus puzzle that produced a $100K winner twice (Elyse Thomas from May 2006 in Denver and Sharon Adams in late April 2012) — Stephen rightly replies “I’LL BE BACK IN A FLASH” for $1,750.

SOLE DUD: T (Dale)

Stephen: $11,900/Allison: $10,800 cash & Aruba WC/Dale: $10,350

Round 5: FUN & GAMES

After Stephen’s $1,300 pair of T’s and a dud buy of O, it’s S-U time…

_ _ _ T _ _ _
T _ _ / _ _ _ _

…w/ a $1,550 FS. The R has been filled in next…

_ _ _ T _ R _
T _ _ / _ _ _ _

…and Allison solves “CAPTURE THE FLAG” to win the match.

SOLE DUD (before bell): O (Stephen)

Stephen: $11,900/Allison: $12,350 cash & Aruba WC/Dale: $10,350

GT: $34,600

$100K Bonus Round
Allison lands on the W.

Category: WAYD?
Opening board…

PGHO and D give her besides the obvious G…

_ H O O S _ N G
_ / _ _ _ O R

….any college student would know about CHOOSING A MAJOR, but she gets the last word wrong w/ FAVOR and MANOR, costing her $45K.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Decent episode, with our first non-military 2 men vs. 1 woman match. All three did well, but that BR was just plain college vocab.

    My rating: High 6

Also, had Dale solved that R5 puzzle instead of Allison…there would've been a TIEBREAKER!

[gasp] You had a NOON showing, Andy? Lucky! I wish I had that…

Ultimately this episode lacked. Except for all 3 Contestants winning 5 digits, But that $45K loss really plunge my rating.

    My rating: 3
